“Baby,” My Angel

image001

Many of you knew “Baby,” my beautiful and gregarious red Abyssinian, as my co -counselor and help-mate, always there to show an appreciative yawn, stretching or snoozing in the sunny window, playing on my computer key-board while deleting hours of work, or giving you extra encouragement with gentle nose-or forehead-nudges.

Baby 1

I thought you might want to know he passed away peacefully in one of his favorite sunny spots on December 11, 2009. He was my constant companion for more than 17 years, which is equivalent to more than 100 human years! It’s hard to believe, and I’m so lucky that, he was so healthy for so long. In fact, three of these photos were taken when he was 16 or 17 years old.

Baby had a lovely and long life. He spent most of his time with great companions - not just with me, but with many of the friends, family, colleagues and clients who visited my home and the office and were comforted by his presence. He was very social and loved the company, too.

In his later years, he got to spend much time in an enclosed backyard in the great outdoors (he was too old to climb the trees or get into too much trouble by then). He loved being out in nature, sitting among the grasses and harrassing the squirrels and birds who dared come near. He was definitely an “alpha-male” protecting his turf and his loved ones. He wasn’t afraid of anything or anyone. He wasn’t the kind of cat who would disappear when we had guests - human or animal. In fact, large dogs who visited on occasion, would stand paralyzed as Baby looked them over, sometimes running straight up to them to sniff their big noses! He was bold and always stood his ground.

I miss him terribly but am comforted knowing he lived such a wonderful and happy life and touched so many with his delightful personality. There will never be another “Baby,” who I envision now as my angel looking over all of us! My buddy Art Buchwald, Pulitzer-Prize-winning author and humorist, once told me Baby should write my next diet book since he was really the brains behind “Personalized Nutrition” and knew all the secrets as my very discreet and trustworthy partner. Perhaps Art and Baby are both in Heaven channeling to me my next best-seller!  With Baby’s smarts and Art’s creativity, something great may happen...
